4th EAP, 5th and 6th graders—are you ready to become a “mathlete” and join the Sunrise Math Olympiad Team? Challenge yourself with new math and problem solving skills, and test what you’ve learned by competing in math tournaments. Students will work on curriculum that is 1-2 years ABOVE grade level.
The Math Olympiad Team is a PTA sponsored, volunteer run program. The program runs from October to April. There will be a $20 fee per student*. Students will participate in monthly in-class and local math contests. Info about the in-class contest from MOEMS (Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary & Middle Schools) can be found at http://moems.org.
There will be two classes, one using the MOEMS elementary school tests (generally for 4th EAP and 5th/6th non-EAP), the other the MOEMS middle school tests (for 5th/6th EAP). Classes will meet once a week at Sunrise, starting the week of Oct. 10th. Class times haven’t been finalized yet, but will tentatively be afternoons, Tuesday 3:30-4:30 for the middle school level class and Wednesday 2:00-3:00 for the elementary level class. We’re switching to all afternoon classes this year because this is the only opportunity for this year’s non-EAP 5th graders to attend Math Olympiad, and we’re trying to avoid conflicts with morning orchestra and band class times.
Are you interested? Please fill out the sign-up form (below) and return the lower portion, along with a check made out to Sunrise PTA for $20*, to the Sunrise office PTA bin—look for the “Math Olympiad” envelope. Space is limited – first come first serve!!!
Want to help? Important change this year! We need volunteers. After-school classes this year must have a second adult present for all sessions; if that adult doesn’t show, the day’s class is cancelled. So we’re looking for a number of parents who can share the responsibility. Please consider helping out! If you’re interested in helping out as a teacher, please let us know as well.
Questions (or to volunteer as a co-teacher): Please contact Phil Lucido, firstname.lastname@example.org
